Secretary-Treasurer Eric Tate – S. Cal Teamster Newspaper Column (dated August. 12, 2018)

Hello all and Happy Summer!  I hope you are all staying cool in this heat.

We are sorry to have lost the following: Joe Bob Garcia, US Foods retiree; Ricardo Perez, 1st Transit, Pasadena;  Frank Salinas Jr. of Ralphs on the  loss of his father; Maurice Bennett, Ralphs, on the loss of his mother; and Jag Geotina, Ralphs, on the loss of his mother.

Ralph Black/Juan Medina: Ralphs – our legal dept. is in the arbitrator selection process for the drive-cam grievance with the company.  Date(s) will be given to meet once this process is done. Vons – we have contacted the pension trust to start the process of checking contributions of Local 848 members who are domiciled at the Boxford yard. Those members should have contributions paid by the company at the rate stated in the Vons/848 contract. Naked Juice – congratulations to Micah Hillier, he has been appointed shop steward. Micah will be working with stewards Chris Fernandez, Frank Medina and Brad Reeves. SGW&S/YMCO drivers – at this time there are no updates to share with you brothers regarding contract negotiations. We’d like to congratulate our newly appointed shop steward Joe Rivera on the semi-driver side. BakeMark – we are awaiting responses from our JLM meeting. Update will come soon. CPFD – CBA has now been completed and will be out to you soon. DPI – CBA is still being reviewed and when completed will go out to print. US Foods Corona – we are scheduled to begin negotiations this August and should have updates for you shortly.

Tom Tullius: Aramark/Carson – Julio Salazar has been appointed as the second shop steward in Carson. Congratulations. The Union has requested that the Filter Exchange due to start on July 1, 2018 be put on hold until the Union and the company can meet and discuss how this new program will work. The issue of pay raises not happening on time and possible retro pay are being worked on with management.  Aramark/Orange – welcome to this new unit. The Teamster Oath was administered this July making these members official. Kris Alvarado and Danny Canas were elected as shop stewards. Congratulations to both. The company has been paying the medical costs for the Labor Alliance medical, but they are still charging the old copay rate. We’re working to get that corrected.  Farmer Bros. – the new business procedure is still catching RSRs failing to meet the requirements. It means doing some extra work but that beats the discipline. I was handed the warehouse specialist job description and it sounds like more of a management position rather than a Union position. I’ll be doing some checking. Arleta warehouse associate position is available. Rumors are going around about how the company is planning on handling this. I’ll be getting with management.  Reyes Coca Cola – I’m in the process of meeting with the various managers for the drivers at the different facilities. The “mandatory/extra day work” came up this past week. I received clarification on how this works and who are affected. A volunteer list is posted; if not enough volunteers then there is a draft of the least senior drivers available. Drivers with non-consecutive 4/10 schedules and extra drivers are exempt from the mandatory work.  Apffel Coffee and Smuckers: I’m back.

Gordon Ament – First Transit Cerritos: there are open positions for shop steward alternates – please contact my office if interested. Keolis Pomona – due to the excessive amount of errors on the current bid which created seniority violations, the company will be conducting a rebid. Please inform your stewards of any additional issues with the current bid so they can be properly addressed. The new CBA has been proofread and will be available in the near future. L.A. Regional Food Bank – we are currently in negotiations. Keep an eye on the Union Board for updates. There are open positions for alternate shop steward positions – please contact my office if interested. MV Trans Burbank Bus – there are open positions for stewards and alternates – please contact my office if interested. MV Glendale Bee Line – we are currently in negotiations. Keep an eye on the Union Board for updates. MV Glendale (DAR) – there are open positions for shop stewards and alternates, please contact my office if interested. MV Thousand Oaks/Calabasas – there are open positions for shop stewards and alternates, please contact my office if interested. Transdev LACMTA – the new CBA has been proofread and will be available in the near future. There are open positions for shop steward alternate. If interested, please contact my office.
