DIGNITY FOR SAVAGE DRIVERS

Dignity for Savage Drivers

ABOUT OUR FIGHT

In late 2017, we – the employees at Savage Services – began to organize with the Teamsters in hopes of improving working conditions and securing better wages and benefits for ourselves and our families.

Almost immediately, the company hired anti-union “consultants” and began to violate the National Labor Relations Act in order to interfere with our right to determine whether to unionize with the Teamsters.

Despite Savage’s efforts, in May 2018, a majority of eligible employees voted to exercise our right to collectively bargain with the company by selecting the Teamsters as our exclusive bargaining representative.

For more than a year since then, Savage has refused to accept our choice by refusing to count the votes of all eligible employees, including a Union activist employee that Savage unlawfully terminated, and beginning to bargain with us.

Instead, Savage continues to utilize anti-union “consultants” to fight our efforts to unionize.

In fact, the National Labor Relations Board has issued a complaint alleging that Savage has violated the National Labor Relations Act by:

  • Directing employees not to wear pro-Union insignia or sign Union authorization cards
  • Soliciting and offering to resolve individual employee grievances if they rejected the Union

  • Creating the impression that it was surveilling employees’ Union activities

  • Interrogating employees about their Union activities and knowledge of the Union’s organizing campaign

  • Threatening termination and plant closure as a result of employees’ efforts to unionize

  • Terminating an employee in retaliation for his Union and other protected concerted activity

WHO WE ARE

We are hard working men and women who haul refinery products from Chevron, Tesoro, Valero, and PBF refineries to the Port of Los Angeles. In May 2018, a majority of eligible employees voted to exercise our right to collectively bargain with Savage by selecting the Teamsters as our exclusive bargaining representative. Yet Savage has refused to recognize or bargain with our Union, Teamsters Local 848.

OUR DEMANDS

Savage must cease and desist from violating our rights under the National Labor Relations Act, reinstate unlawfully terminated workers, and respect our choice of Teamsters Local 848 as our exclusive bargaining representative by counting the votes of all eligible employees, including the one Savage unlawfully terminated, and engaging in good faith negotiations over a first contract.
